Hey all,
Recently procured a FW410. Happy with it when it works, but I have several repeating and extremely aggravating problems.
I'm running the FW410 into a MacBook Pro via a Firewire 400-800 adapter. I make sure not to hotplug. Drivers are up to date (I've tried reinstalling before to alleviate the following problems, to no avail).
I'm running a Line 6 POD HD Pro into the interface via two analog XLR for stereo (wet) input, plus S/PDIF for digital (dry) recording. I have set the software mixer such that the sync is external to correspond with the Pro's sampling rate of 44.1KHZ.
Most of the time, this works fine. In Reaper, I arm two tracks so that I record a stereo wet signal and a dry signal from S/PDIF. Exactly what I want. However, this is unbelievably inconsistent.
At random times, I will hear a complete stop in audio from the FW410. All lights blink off and if I look at the software mixer, the sampling rate has turned red. Sometimes, after the brief interruption, I can go back to recording. If I do, my signal is garbled. The original signal is there, but it's coated in oscillating noise that makes the signal completely unusable. Each time this happens, I close the laptop, make sure it's asleep, turn the FW410 off, unplug it, replug, turn back on, and boot the laptop up again. Usually after this, I can record fine... until the sampling rate spazzes out again. And the whole process repeats. As a result, recording parts that would normally take me 20 minutes with the HD Pro direct in via USB ends up taking 2 hours or more.
The other problem is that at random points no sound goes to the phones. The analog ins, S/PDIF in, and software returns show activity but nothing for the phones. Usually, I have to toggle the monitor buttons under the phones and SOMETIMES that gets me sound back.
This seems ridiculous though. If 1/2 is selected under the phones, shouldn't I be getting the sound from 1/2 without having to toggle it off and on?
I'm strapped for time and need to pound out a recording project very soon here. Constantly toggling software switches and being unsure of whether my take will be usable or not is really frustrating and if I can't get it figured out soon I'll be switching to another (non M-Audio) interface. I heard a lot of praise for this unit so I hope that's not the case. I really hope these problems are related to some software configurations and can be resolved with a bit of expertise.
I really appreciate any help. I did consult the FAQs and several seemingly similar threads but haven't found anything exactly related. Again, any help is very much appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to read this.
Best,
Jacob
